When this boy was a wee child:
Reading this book became a nightly ritual:
At the time, I had no idea it was a controversial book. As it turns out it is. Some people find it unsettling that Mickey "fell through the dark, out of his clothes" into his dream state and adventure. We never saw anything wrong with it. Boys, in my experience, are prone to favor a state of undress. My son loved this story and couldn't get enough of it. At bed time, when I would read to him, I would ask, "what should we read tonight? Without fail, without hesitation and without shame he'd go for In the Night Kitchen every time.
It's a good memory thinking of this time we shared each night sharing time reading and devouring his favorite story. I always tried to read to him with fun voices and added drama to make it all the more enjoyable. I wanted to instill in my kids the pleasure and joy of reading and good stories.
What books did you have to read every night to your kids or have read to you as a kid?
